Veterinary Science (BVSc)

Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (BVSc & AH) is a five‑year professional degree program, including a mandatory six‑month internship, designed to train the next generation of veterinary professionals. Veterinary science encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases in animals—from companion pets and livestock to wildlife and zoo animals. As global awareness of animal welfare, food safety, and zoonotic disease prevention grows, veterinary professionals are in greater demand than ever before.

The program begins with foundational courses in veterinary anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and animal genetics. Students study the anatomical structures and physiological processes of diverse animal species—cattle, horses, dogs, cats, poultry, and exotic animals. Histology, embryology, and comparative anatomy provide a thorough understanding of species‑specific differences that are essential for clinical practice. Laboratory sessions involve dissection, microscopy, and biochemical analysis, developing practical skills that complement theoretical knowledge.

Clinical education forms the core of the middle and advanced years. Students study veterinary pathology, microbiology, parasitology, pharmacology, toxicology, and veterinary public health. They rotate through clinical departments including veterinary medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, radiology, and preventive medicine. Teaching veterinary hospitals provide hands‑on experience with large animals (cattle, buffalo, horses) and small animals (dogs, cats), allowing students to develop diagnostic skills, surgical techniques, and therapeutic approaches under faculty supervision.

Animal husbandry—the science of breeding, feeding, and managing livestock—is an integral component. Students learn livestock management practices, dairy science, poultry production, aquaculture, and animal nutrition. This knowledge is critically important in countries like India, where livestock farming is a major economic activity supporting millions of rural livelihoods. The internship period provides intensive clinical and field experience at veterinary hospitals, dairy farms, poultry units, and wildlife sanctuaries, producing well‑rounded graduates ready for diverse career opportunities.
