BAMS – Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery

Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is a 5.5‑year degree program, including a one‑year compulsory internship, that trains students in the ancient Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda. As the world's oldest continuous healthcare tradition—dating back over 5,000 years—Ayurveda has experienced a global renaissance. The World Health Organization recognizes Ayurveda as a traditional medicine system, and there is growing scientific research validating its principles. BAMS graduates are qualified to practice as Ayurvedic physicians and surgeons, offering natural, holistic, and personalised healthcare that addresses the root causes of disease rather than merely treating symptoms.

The curriculum uniquely combines Ayurvedic sciences with modern medical knowledge. In the foundational years, students study Sanskrit (the language of classical Ayurvedic texts), Padartha Vigyan (Ayurvedic philosophy), Rachna Sharir (anatomy), Kriya Sharir (physiology), Dravyaguna (pharmacology of medicinal plants), Rasashastra and Bhaishajya Kalpana (pharmaceutical preparations), and Agadtantra (toxicology and forensic medicine). Simultaneously, students receive training in modern anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry through dissection and laboratory work, ensuring they understand both traditional and contemporary medical frameworks.

Clinical education covers eight specialised branches of Ayurveda: Kayachikitsa (internal medicine), Shalya Tantra (surgery), Shalakya Tantra (ENT and ophthalmology), Kaumarabhritya (paediatrics), Prasuti and Stri Roga (obstetrics and gynaecology), Panchakarma (detoxification therapies), Swasthavritta (preventive medicine and yoga), and Mano Roga (psychiatry). Students gain clinical experience in Ayurvedic hospitals and clinics, treating patients with conditions ranging from digestive disorders and skin diseases to musculoskeletal problems and chronic illnesses using herbal medicines, dietary modifications, lifestyle counselling, Panchakarma therapies, and yoga.

The internship year provides intensive hands‑on training across all clinical departments. Interns manage outpatient and inpatient cases, conduct Panchakarma procedures, prepare Ayurvedic formulations, and participate in community health programs. Many universities also offer integrated training where BAMS students gain exposure to modern diagnostic tools—X‑rays, blood tests, and imaging—enabling them to make informed clinical decisions and refer patients appropriately. This integrated approach produces well‑rounded practitioners who can bridge traditional and contemporary healthcare systems.
