Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) is a 5.5‑year degree program (including a one‑year compulsory internship) that trains students in homeopathy—a system of alternative medicine founded by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the late 18th century. Based on the principle of "similia similibus curentur" (like cures like), homeopathy uses highly diluted natural substances to stimulate the body's innate healing mechanisms. India is the global leader in homeopathic education and practice, with over 300,000 registered homeopathic practitioners and a robust network of government and private homeopathic hospitals.

The BHMS curriculum provides comprehensive training in both homeopathic and modern medical sciences. Foundational years cover human anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pathology—ensuring students possess the same scientific understanding as their allopathic counterparts. Simultaneously, students study Organon of Medicine (homeopathic philosophy and principles), Materia Medica (detailed study of homeopathic remedies), Repertory (systematic classification of symptoms and corresponding remedies), and Homeopathic Pharmacy (preparation and dispensing of homeopathic medicines). This dual training enables BHMS graduates to understand conventional diagnoses while applying homeopathic therapeutic principles.

Clinical training encompasses both outpatient and inpatient management of diverse medical conditions. Students learn to take detailed case histories—a hallmark of homeopathic practice that considers physical symptoms, emotional states, mental characteristics, and lifestyle factors to select the most appropriate remedy. They manage cases in homeopathic hospitals covering general medicine, surgery (minor procedures), paediatrics, gynaecology, dermatology, psychiatry, and community medicine. The emphasis on individualised treatment plans and patient‑centred care develops excellent clinical observation and interpersonal skills.

The internship year consolidates clinical competence through intensive patient management across all departments. Interns conduct independent consultations, manage follow‑up cases, participate in emergency care, and contribute to research projects. Many institutions also provide exposure to integrated medical settings where homeopathy is used alongside conventional treatments.
