The Australian Student Visa allows you to live, study, and work in Australia for the duration of your course (up to 5 years). The process requires meticulous documentation and strict adherence to Department of Home Affairs (DHA) guidelines.
Replacing GTE with the Genuine Student (GS) Requirement
Australia has replaced the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement. Under GS, you must provide comprehensive answers to questions detailing:
- Details of your current circumstances in your home country (family, employment, economic situation).
- Why you chose that specific course and that specific education provider in Australia.
- How completing the course will benefit you in your future career.
- If you have a study gap, you must provide a detailed explanation.
Proof of Financial Capacity
You must prove you have enough money to cover:
- Your return flight.
- 12 months of course fees.
- 12 months of living costs (Currently set at AUD 29,710 for the main student).
Acceptable proof includes education loans from recognized banks, or recent bank statements showing genuine savings held by your parents or acceptable sponsors.
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
It is mandatory to purchase OSHC for yourself (and any accompanying family members) for the entire duration of your visa before the visa is granted. Most universities will arrange this for you and include it in your initial payment.
Steps to Apply
- Receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from the university.
- Gather all required documents (identity, academics, financials, English scores, GS responses).
- Create an ImmiAccount and submit the online application.
- Pay the visa application charge (AUD 710 approx).
- Undergo biometrics collection and medical examination.
