Why do you need a Birth Certificate Apostille?
A birth certificate is a core personal document. An apostille is required on your Indian birth certificate when you are applying for long-term residency in any country that is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Common scenarios include:
- Applying for a Dependent Visa / Spouse Visa.
- Sponsoring a child's visa.
- Applying for Permanent Residency (e.g., Canada PR, Australia Subclass 189/190).
- Enrolling a child in a foreign school.
The Verification Process
Because a birth certificate is a personal/non-educational document, the attestation process is slightly different than that for degrees.
- Notary Attestation: The document is verified locally by a Notary Public.
- Home Department / SDM Attestation: Personal documents do NOT go to the HRD. Instead, they are authenticated by the State Home Department or the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), New Delhi. SDM attestation is the preferred route due to its speed (2-3 days).
- MEA Apostille: The Ministry of External Affairs finally affixes the required Apostille sticker verifying the SDM/Home Department seal.
Translation Requirements
If your birth certificate is in a regional language (e.g., Bengali, Hindi, Tamil) AND you are traveling to a non-English speaking country (like Germany, France, or Italy), you may also need a certified translation in that country's language. We provide authorized translation services as well.
Required Documents
- Original Birth Certificate: MEA requires the original document. No photocopies or laminations (we will carefully remove lamination if required).
- Passport Copy: Front and back copy of the passport of the certificate holder (or parents if the holder is a minor).
